What NOT to wear during your photoshoot...

This might seem totally harsh...but your outfit can MAKE or BREAK your photos.

Especially if you reaaaaaaally want your photos to be ALL. ABOUT. YOU.

Let's give a little example, shall we??

Picture you and your love up in the mountains. The sun is setting in the background, giving a warm, rich glow to everything around you. You're all wrapped up in each other's arms, with shadowy mountains behind you. It's magical. Romantic. Buuuuuuuut you get your pictures back from your photographer and... the only thing your eyes focus on... is the bright neon pink shirt you thought looked SO CUTE when you tried it on at home. (Well, you were right, it is cute...but is your neon shirt really what you wanted your pictures to be all about?? Nope. Didn't think so.)

BUMMER.

Do you get what I'm trying to say here??

When you take time out of your busy schedule and invest your hard-earned dollars into hiring a photographer to document your love, the last thing you're gonna want is to bring allllll the attention away from the most important thing. (or things...) YOU TWO. And your love... (sooo three things I guess.)

Here's a few tips to stear clear of eye-distracting wardrobe fails. (That really, in any other situation, would not be fails at all!)

-Avoid neons. (Do you need to re-read that section above??)

-Try not to wear clothes with distracting logos. (I get it, Nike is cool and all. But not super romantic...)

-Color coordinate. (Notice I didn't say be all matchy matchy...hmmmm...)

-Pay attention to what the location looks like. For example. if you have a busy background, like lots of colorful wildflowers, try not to wear busy patterned clothing. (or florals...flowers on flowers?? Not so cute.) It'll make you a little dizzy. Instead, choose solid-colored clothes.

-Don't wear clothes that don't fit right. (Too loose or too tight. If you're uncomfortable, it'll show.)

-Take things out of your pockets!!! Guys, I'm talking to you. No keys, no phones, no pocket knives. (My husband will gladly hold your pocket knives. But he might throw them at trees...)

Ok Erika, so what in the heck CAN I wear!?

Glad you asked. :)

This is what I recommend to allllll the couples I work with.

1. Do a google search of your location *in the right season* to see what colors will be in your backdrop. Then, wear colors that look GOOD with the scenery. For example, if you're headed up to the mountains in the spring, there are lots of neutral, earthy colors to choose from. If you're headed to sand dunes, you could wear white or deep moody colors to offset the sand.

2. Don't match each other. It is SOOOO much more visually appealing to wear DIFFERENT but complimentary colors than your significant other. If your outfits match, your eyes will focus on that instead of on YOU TWO and your love. Sad day.

3. Figure out what kind of "mood" you want your pictures to have and wear clothes that fit in with what you're envisioning. For example. if you're going for a really cozy vibe, wear comfy sweaters and your hair up in a messy bun. If you want an adventurous feel, wear loose clothing and your hair down so the wind can play around with it. If you want a moody, romantic vibe, wear dark, fitted clothes, and your hair in a loose braid or some other similar cute style.

All in all, what I really hope you get from this is that it realllly pays off to be intentional about what you wear during your photoshoot. Take the time to prepare, iron your clothes, all that good stuff. I mean heck, you're paying for this. Don't you want to look dannnnng good!?!?

Anywho, I am here to SERVE you. Having photographed many many couples, I swear I've seen it all. Outfits do have a crazy impact on the feel of the shoot. And really, if you're reading this and still have no clue what to wear for your photoshoot, please shoot me a message. I loveeeee clothes (like, one of my first business ideas was to be a wardrobe designer. I even went to people's houses to sort out their clothes and create new outfits for them. Did I mention I love clothes??) so I'd be more than happy to help. (Even if you've booked with a different photographer. I might give you a little crap for it, I mean, it's only fair-right!? but still, I'm super happy to help.)

Suerte my friends, suerte.

Until next time!

-Erika Laub
